You should always have a reason to make your call. Sometimes, we might have a compelling reason to bid (like a good suit), but not the values to bid. In some circumstances, that shouldn't stop us! If bidding (or making a lead-directional double) will help partner defend properly, we should get in there aggressively.
The key is to pay attention to the situation. Usually, we'll make these bids in situations where:
A) The opponents are unlikely to profitably double us; and
B) Partner isn't likely to do anything too catastrophic
I expect many players to pass throughout this quiz the first time. I also expect some players to start getting too aggressive in situations that turn out to be dangerous. You have to learn how to pick your spots, but finding this type of call will add a new dimension to your game (and keep you involved in auctions you may have slept through in the past).
