Newer students of doubles get confused between the meanings of doubling followed by a new suit when partner opens as opposed to when RHO opens.
A Negative Double (double when partner opens) followed by a bid is weak -- this is a hand that wasn't strong enough to bid the suit naturally on the two level the first time (which would be 10+).
A Takeout Double (when RHO opens) followed by a bid is strong. This is a hand too good to overcall since overcalls are limited to about 17 points.
Try this quiz to test your knowledge of what it means to double and then bid again. If you struggle, we suggest checking out Marty and Larry's Series on Doubles here.
