LHO opens 1, raised to 2 as shown. And your action is...?
Choose One:
Pass
Double
2NT
Other
Answer: 1 -
Pass. As much as I try to come into such an auction (opponents bid and raise a major to the two level), I don't have the right hand/shape to do so here.
Everyone passes and partner leads the J against 2 as shown below. What is your plan for the defense?
Choose One:
I don't make plans on defense. I want to sleep through this one.
Play low.
Play the Q and then take the A.
Play the Q and then the J.
Play the Q and then the 6.
Other.
Answer: 6 -
Other. I have to keep you honest by not always naming the correct play. This dummy screams for trump plays. You have the clubs bottled up. Declarer is unlikely to be able to get rid of any losers. However, he likely has some low hearts he wants to trump in dummy.
You know this (partner doesn't) and besides, the trump play should come from your side of the table (as you will see below). So, win the Q to shift to a trump. After you do so, these cards remain:
Declarer will likely finesse (he can't see all the cards). Partner should follow your good defense by winning the K and returning a trump. When in with your A you will play the 3rd round of trump. Declarer will lose a total of 4 hearts and 2 diamonds and the K for down 2--well done!
