We just returned from our first ever Regional on a River in Europe and it was a magical experience for all. We spent so much of our time thinking about Kings and Queens, it was only fitting that we should see some castles:

 

  

Of course, in addition to the food, sightseeing, drinks, and more food, there was still plenty of time for bridge. 

I noticed a theme emerging from the questions that players would ask me and Michael. Take a look at the deal below.

Players would look at the hand records or go over their results, and bring me this type of deal and ask, "How do we stay out of 3NT?" My answer is simple: you don't! You'll be in 3NT after opening 1NT and hearing partner bid 3NT. You'll go down two!

When you review deals, it's a great to be able to ask experts (or the local ace) about what you should do. One of the luxuries of the Regional at Sea events is that we encourage you to ask me or Michael or our bridge staff, but even at home when you look at your results, it's good to default to basics. Did you have 25 (or more) HCP combined? Did you miss a major suit fit? If the answers are yes and no, then you probably found a reasonable spot.

It's often better to check out the other scores in the game rather than just relying on your results combined with the hand record.
