Dear Fellow Bridge Players, This month, I have articles on "modern" doubles and something even more modern called XYZ. Also, since many of you are interested in my personal life, I've embarrassed myself with a clip of "out of breath Larry" (trying to get in shape; yes, I know--Exercise for most bridge players means sitting East-West). You will find the regular features and some announcements about new 2011 events. The newest is my June appearance with Audrey Grant and Jerry Helms in Las Vegas.

The Penalty Double is Dead
Every year, there are fewer and fewer PENALTY DOUBLES in bridge. My late friend, Bernie Chazen (pictured here), and I used to give seminars on doubles. His famous words were "The Penalty Double Has Died and Gone to Heaven." To read more, click here.

XYZ
For my more advanced readers, click here to read about XYZ. In grade school,it was a snide way to say "eXamine Your Zipper." In bridge, it is a new treatment dealing with responder's rebid.

When Not Playing Bridge
Has "exercise" ever been in a bridge newsletter? My summer featured the Utah mountains and this clip is from my 10-hour climb up 11,749-foot Mt.Timpanogos.
